Overseas Visitors
Charges for overseas visitors
The United Kingdom (UK) has arrangements in place which cover nationals of all member states of the European Economic Area (EEA) and several other countries
which are listed below. If you are a national visiting the UK from one of these countries you will probably not have to pay any charges if you need to visit
a doctor while in the UK, so long as you satisfy certain conditions. For example charges may still apply in respect of certain conditions in existence before
you travelled to the UK. You may also be required to produce evidence of entitlement such as a valid passport, or in the case of EEA nationals a European
Health Insurance Card. The full details of who is eligible for free treatment are currently under review by the Department of Health and a detailed publication
is expected later in
2009.
If you are not eligible for free treatment
If you are not eligible for free treatment then you will probably be liable to pay the charges shown in the “Non-NHS Fees” section of our website. Consultation
charges will be payable in cash at the time of treatment and you will also have to pay for any medication prescribed. Our charges are in line with those recommended
by the British Medical Association.
